
The February coin design depicts thousand-year-old records of native heritage and spirituality with three images including a horse, a human and a shield-bearing warrior, all originating on sandstone cliffs at Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park in Alberta. Lonnie Springer, an artist, teacher, administrator and outdoor enthusiast is the creator of this design. In commenting on his design, Mr. Springer said "It represents the importance of native culture within the spirit of Canada."
The entire town of Milk River, Alberta took part in the February 1, 1999 coin launch at the local community center.
